The Old Plough, as it stands today, is a collection of several smaller buildings, the oldest part being where the breakfast room is now, believed to date back to the 17th Century. There has been an ale house of some description on this site since records began right up until 1995 when the Council allowed a change of use to a dwelling. The long building nearest to the car park was the village Post Office in the mid-1900s and, more recently, the upper floor was used as the skittle alley for the pub when it was known as the Plough Inn. Around 1960 the buildings were connected by a flat roof structure to make a fairly large pub and, for a while, the business thrived thanks largely to a substantial collection of bikers who frequented the establishment. The whole village was apparently taken over by motorbikes on warm summer weekends. The conversion of the buildings to the large house you see today took us over five years and there is still more to do, as you can see. All of the flat roofs have been reconstructed into pitched roofs and the interior has been totally refitted. A barn-type garage is under construction to the rear of the car park, and decking and walkway surfaces should be completed later in 2004. |
