possibility of starting the Upton Community Radio Station

2. Setting up Upton-upon-Severn Radio Station or Internet Radio Station
Who would benefit?
a) Children and young adults in Upton would benefit from powerful learning opportunities that could be provided on the Station, particularly during school vacation periods.
b) Adults of all ages in Upton would benefit from programmes designed to meet their interests and needs
c) The town trading community by attracting advertising and promotional activity through the radio station world-wide web connectivity
d) Everyone interested in participating in setting up a community project that is inclusive and fun.

The Internet is becoming an increasingly popular platform for radio listening, due to it offering a number of advantages compared to the other digital platforms such as DAB, and some of the forms of radio it carries are only available via the Internet:
• Higher audio quality than on DAB
• On-demand (listen again) programmes
• Thousands of Internet radio stations available covering a very wide range of genres and including Community radio.
• Podcasts
• Personalised radio stations, e.g. last.fm
On-demand (listen again) programmes
Internet radio streams are described as either being 'live', which means that they're equivalent to a normal continuous live radio broadcast, or 'on-demand', which is the radio equivalent of video-on-demand, where the listener chooses what programme to listen to out of a library of programmes available.
As the phenomenal success of the BBC iPlayer TV streams has already indicated, on-demand TV viewing and radio listening is expected to grow sharply over the next decade.
what do you think??

Useful local online resources

Just thought I'd note down a few links to local online resources that I feel are useful (other than Jackie's excellent Upton.uk.net of course).

Malvern Hills Freecycle
Before you chuck that unwanted item in the dump why not consider giving it to somebody else? Likewise before buying something new, why not see if you can save something from going to landfill instead? The service is extremely popular and very easy to use, either via email or the website.

Malvern Hills Freecycle Cafe
An open discussion group.

Malvern Swapit or Flogit
Similar to freecycle but you can ask for money. We've recently got a few items on there that were cheaper than ebay and obviously we could collect so saved packaging and postage costs.

Thoughts following the Upton Showcase

The Upton Showcase, held on 18th and 19th April was an opportunity for voluntary and professionals to show what they do. It was organised by Upton upon Severn Community Pride Steering Group for the Town Plan in Partnership with Community Action Malvern & District and Upton Town Council. It proved very successful with a lot of people coming into the Memorial Hall to see the displays.

Taking part were:
Malvern Hills District Council 'Vision 21'
Community Action Malvern & District
Duckworth Trust Worcestershire
County Association Local Councils
Upton in Bloom
Disability Malvern Access
Upton Civic Society
Royal British Legion
Upton Community Care
Play Rangers
Borrowers Toy Library
Hereford & Worcestershire Fire Brigade
Upton Tourism & Trade Association
Malvern Hills Youth Development
Malvern Citizens Advice Bureau
Upton Website
Worcestershire Biodiversity
Upton Local Policing Force
Upton Surgery
Upton Community Pride
Malvern Hills Coppice Network Volunteers
Mercia Inshore Search and Rescue

There are many other groups in Upton run by volunteers, of which Upton Youth Band, Upton Arts & Music Group, Pepperpot Players, the Sports Club and Rowing Club are but a few. The many footpaths around the town are looked after by a volunteer Footpaths Officer; the Upton News is a non-profit local paper; the Heritage Centre is staffed by volunteers.

Without volunteers I think the country would grind to a halt! There is too much 'Why don't they do something about it?' where 'they' are local authorities. Nowadays 'they' are short of money, driven by budgets and ever more rules and regulations coming from central government. Perhaps we can all do something to help - even picking up a bit of litter rather than leaving it for 'them'. OK, we can't paint the bridge, but there are lots of little things we can do to improve our environment, or help where held is needed.

A thought-provoking little story:

Once upon a time, there were four people. Their names were Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody.

Whenever there was an important job to be done, Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

When Nobody did it, Everybody got angry because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought that Somebody would do it, but Nobody realised that Nobody would do it.

So consequently Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done in the first place.
