We are concerned about the use of peat in the garden (peat is a non-renewable resource) and in 2007 we decided to test non-peat compost. A boat at the entrance to Hanley Road car park was filled with ‘Greengrow', compost produced from Upton's garden waste by Severn Waste Services. Following the July floods, all the riverside tubs and several boats had to be either totally or partially refilled with compost and replanted. The compost used was Greengrow. All the compost was donated by Severn Waste Services. The boat in early Summer Following the Summer displays, Upton in Bloom's riverside tubs and display boats were replanted for Winter colour, and where necessary were topped up with Greengrow. Again, the displays have done very well. They are all in flower with violas, primroses and cyclamens, with crocus and mini daffodils coming into bloom and wallflowers poised to flower. The Greengrow boat in Winter We have been extremely pleased with the results, both in the Greengrow boat, and the other displays. This year, we will be using Greengrow for most of our planting. Greengrow is available in bags from the Hanley Road Recycling Centre. At our Exhibition of alternatives to plastic, two companies sent samples of coir (coconut fibre). These companies are The Natural Gardener and Hairy Plant Pots. As an experiment in 2008 we have asked Brian Williams of Earls Croome Garden Centre to grow our plants in non-peat rather than plastic pots and he has agreed to do this as far as possible.
