April 25th 2008Pupils from Hanley Castle High School gave up their lunch break to come and litter pick in the Hanley Road car park area. They arrived in the school bus, driven by Ann Hume, their Deputy Headmistress. Alan Biddle, MHDC Street Scene Warden met them with litter pickers, bags and gloves. The pupils divided into two teams and litter picked down the left hand side of the car park, into New Street, and back into the car park via the road entrance. They had brought a set of scales with them, and when the litter was weighed, each team had collected 7kg. A draw! The litter included plastic bags (of course), bottles, cans, crisp packets, and a demi-john. Given that they only had about 20 minutes, they did a great job. I asked if this was part of a project, and they replied 'No, its because we care about the environment'. The pupils will be back on 29th May to litter pick the Old Street car park and part of the Sports Field. |
