Heart of England in BloomJudging Upton in Bloom, July 26th 2005The Upton in Bloom Committee had prepared a route for the judges which started at the Marina and finished at the Swan Hotel. The main presentation took place on the Old Churchyard. The theme of the display was 'Evacuation of Dunkirk 1940'. Admiral Sir William Tennant, whose bust is in the Old Churchyard, was Beachmaster at Dunkirk and was born in Upton upon Severn. The route took in conservation & recycling, floral displays, last year's local competition winners, a marching display by Upton Youth Band and private gardens. At their first sight of the display one of the judges was heard to say 'Wow'! There were a lot of people there to greet them, including Sir William's niece, veterans from Dunkirk, members of the British Legion, local artists, Upton Youth Band, a display of local produce from Tiltridge Vineyard, children from Kids Kapers. Evy Hill read a lovely poem about Upton in Bloom. Most of the previous weekend, Monday, and Tuesday morning were spent planting, cleaning, weeding and other jobs, all to make the town look really good. The Committee would like to thank all those who helped them. Now we have to wait until September 2nd to find out our results... |
