In 2002, all members of the community of all ages have a unique opportunity
to celebrate collectively Upton's past, present and future. As part
of the local celebration of the fifty years reign of Queen Elizabeth
II, various groups in Upton-upon-Severn are planning a range of events.
These will take place on the weekend from Saturday, June lst. to Tuesday,
June 4th.. The Civic Society will play its part by organising an exhibition
in the Memorial Hall in Old Street. The Civic Society cordially invites
ALL members of the local community to contribute towards the exhibition.
If you have ideas and/or materials that can be used in the exhibition,
please contact the Organisers.

THEN AND NOW: THE PARISH IN THE NATION
Exhibition organised by the Upton-upon-Severn Civic Society
In honour of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to
the Throne in 1952
Venue: The Memorial Hall, Old Street, Upton-upon-Severn.
Dates: Saturday, June 1st., Exhibition OPEN 10-30 a.m. to 4-30
p.m.; Sunday, June 2nd. , Exhibition CLOSED;
Monday, June 3rd., Exhibition OPEN 10-30 a.m. to 4-30 p.m.; Tuesday,
June 4th., OPEN 10-30 a.m. to 1-00 p.m.
ADMISSION FREE
Visitors' involvement In several of the exhibits, those attending the
Exhibition will be invited to identify either themselves, other relations,
friends or neighbours in the various photographic materials displayed.
Visitors will be invited to add comments and/or information). Will you
be able to recognise yourself, your parents or your grandparents in
some of the many photographic exhibits? Videos of the Upton Floods (1947)
and (1990/91) and recent ones of the Upton Water Festival (including
the sinking of a Dragon Boat plus the Laser/Fireworks display) and the
Jazz Festival will be screened at specified times as part of the Exhibition.
As an increasingly popular centre for tourism, attractions in Upton-upon-Severn
in 2002 will be represented in various ways in the Exhibition.
CONTENTS OF THE EXHIBITION: (PROVISIONAL)
A. NATIONAL
Queen Elizabeth II: 1952 and 2002 Display based on archival material
from 1952 concerning the Queen and current material from 2002.
Fifty years of social and economic revolution: changes between 1952
and 2002 Comparisons: the "Big Picture" e.g. A Changing Society;
Crime and Justice; The Economy; Education; Employment; Environment;
Health; Leisure; Living Standards; Population; Transport; Wages and
Prices of houses and goods; the changing popularity of babies' first
names, etc.
B. LOCAL
"A Royal Connection" This exhibit is based on the Royal
Tours attended during some thirty years of service as a Lady's Maid
and Dresser to the Queen's Ladies in Waiting by Ms. Florence Bramford,
Newbridge Green, Upton upon-Severn, RVM (1891 -1985). It will include
extracts from a biography of Ms. Bramford by her niece Ms. Margaret
Bramford of Malvern and entitled "From Cottage to Palace".
There will also be a display of gifts given to Ms. Florence Bramford
as a member of the Queen's entourage (including presents from the Wali
of Swat and Queen Salote of Tonga.
Upton and the Queen's Silver Jubilee, 1977. Do you remember?
Photographs of people taking part in a wide range of activities on the
Town's Playing Field in celebration of the Queen's Silver Jubilee will
be displayed. The Programme of Events for the day will also be shown
so that comparisons with the 2002 Golden Jubilee Celebrations can be
made. Twenty-five years later, can you recognise, for example, The Jubilee
Princess, members of the tug of war team, those in the "cross-dressed"
cricketing teams, contestants in the fancy hat competition and (hardest
of all) those taking part in the knobbly knees competition?
A Civic Society 2002 project -Identifying descendants of the victims
of the 1832 Cholera Plague The first victim lived in Lapstone Alley,
off Dunn's Lane. The site is commemorated by an Upton-upon-Severn Civic
Society blue plaque. A list of THIRTY-SEVEN local inhabitants who died
of the cholera in the epidemic of 1832 giving their full names and ages
will be exhibited. The list includes surnames of families currently
living in Upton-upon-Severn. Is your family name on the list? Do you
have an ancestor who died during the epidemic? PLEASE COME AND LET US
KNOW.
The Upton-upon-Severn Civic Society: its origins, objectives, current
and future activities Extracts and photographs from "Pride
of Place. The story of the Upton-upon-Severn Civic Society, 1967-1988"
by the late Roger Corbet-Millward will be displayed. In the town, the
Civic Society has erected a series of wall plaques identifying places
of historic interest. A map showing where each of these plaques can
be found will be displayed. Information concerning the Civic Society's
current and forthcoming Programmes of Talks and Visits will be presented.
The Civic Society and the Tourist Information Centre
Maps of tours of historic sites and buildings of architectural merit
will be included. Information on the wealth of officially "Listed
buildings" in the area will be displayed.
Maps and aerial photographs This exhibit will include the following
items: three early aerial photographs of Upton-upon- Severn; recent
aerial photographs of Upton-upon-Severn; Upton-upon-Severn and its Waterways;
Upton-upon-Severn at the centre of Ordinance Survey Explorer 190; Old
Upton -an orchard town; and "New Upton".
Old Upton Photographs/postcards of Upton places and events in
1952 and previous years.
Upton-upon-Severn Railway Station A display of photographs, maps
and memorabilia including timetables and fares, will be presented.
The Telephone Exchange in Old Street Information concerning the
Telephone Service, number of subscribers and sample telephone numbers
in 1952 will be provided. It is anticipated that at least one former
telephonist who worked at the Old Street Telephone Exchange will be
present. WHOSE TELEPHONE NUMBER WAS No.1? HAVE YOU EVER PRESSED BUTTONS
"B"? OR 'A'?
Oral History Information on the Civic Society's collection of
audiotape and videotaped recordings of the reminiscences of longstanding
members of the community will be provided. An extract from one interview
will be displayed to illustrate changes in social attitudes. Visitors
are invited to ADD their names to a list of those waiting to have their
reminiscences of life in the local area tape recorded by a member of
the Civic Society.
Activities and events in Upton in 1952 (or thereabouts) and 2002-
Education: 1952 and 2002 The following information will be included:
a. Roll of pupils and staff at Upton-upon Severn C. of E. All-age School
in the 1950s and at the Upton-upon- Severn Primary School in 2002, plus
photographs and extracts from the School Log; b. Roll of pupils and
staff at The Hill Secondary School (opened September,1958), plus photographs;
c. Roll of former pupils and staff at Hanley Castle Grammar School and
current staff and pupils at Hanley Castle High School. Can you match
individuals shown on a 2001 reunion photograph with their pictures taken
over fifty years ago? Several live in the town today.
Changing Businesses: 1952 and 2002 Maps of Upton-upon-Severn
showing changes in the trades represented in the town and the names
of shop owners will be displayed.
Church magazines: 1952 and 2002 (from each church in
the town) Church of England; Roman Catholic Church and the Baptist
Chapel; marriages of Uptonians in 1952 (and adjacent years).
Demolitions Major buildings that existed in 1952 but have since
been demolished.
Local Councillors and Upton's concerns: 1952 and 2002 Lists of
Council Members plus photographs. Extracts from the Council Minutes
of significant events during the respective years.
Upton's social organisations in 1952 and 2002 Many changes have
taken place. Lists of social activities, e.g. local services, clubs,
associations, sports teams, plus photographs.
ARE THERE ANY FORMER MEMBERS OF THE UPTON-UPON SEVERN FLYING CLUB, THE
BOWLING CLUB OR
THE GOLF CLUB STILL LIVING IN THE LOCAL AREA? IF SO PLEASE LET US KNOW
IN 2002 WHERE ARE THE CRICKET, FOOTBALL, HOCKEY AND TENNIS CLUBS -AND
WHY?
Fashion in the 1950s A display of clothes lent by local inhabitants
will be on show. If you have any interesting items, please contact the
organisers. Wedding dresses from the 40's and 50's would be particularly
welcome (tel: 01684 593179).
Medical services in Upton-upon-Severn: 1952 and 2002 Medical
services and staff plus photographs.
Population of the Parish.: 1952 and 2002. Wages: 1952 and 2002. Cost
of housing, goods and services: 1952 and 2002.
The Hotels, Inns and Off-Licenses in the Upton area 1952 and 2002
Two lists of public houses their Landlords/Landladies in 1952 and 2002
will be provided.
HOW MANY PUBLIC HOUSES WERE THERE IN 1952 AND IN 2002? HOW MANY HAVE
YOU VISITED?
A photograph of the Licensed Victuallers' Defence League taken in 1952
will be exhibited.
CAN YOU IDENTIFY ANY OF THE PUBLICANS IN THE PHOTOGRAPH? AT LEAST ONE
STILL LIVES IN THE UPTON AREA?
Upton-upon-Severn 2002 Upton-upon-Severn Web Pages computer demonstration
will be given. Genealogy: the Web Page will be shown, if requested.
In addition, the Family Tree of a well-known Upton family will be put
on display in hard copy. If you have a Family Tree that you would like

Worcestershire History Centre and Record Office (WHC & WRO)
Information concerning the services provided by the HC & WRO will
be displayed. Their fields of expertise include "Oral History in
Worcestershire", "House Hunting at the WRO", "The
Photographic Survey", "Family History Research ", "Tracing
Missing Persons in Worcestershire", and "A Guide to Adoption
Records". The Staff of the HC & WRO have provided training
in interviewing to members of the Civic Society involved in our own
Local Oral History Project.
Videos of Upton-upon-Severn: then and now Floods in 1947; recent
Floods; Upton Water Festival (Including the sinking of a Dragon Boat);
Upton Jazz Festival. (Extracts from the above will be shown at times
to be specified later).

Display of Plans for Proposed Marina Extension; Display of Plans for

Golden Jubilee Year Garter Ceremony Procession, Windsor Castle, June
17th., 2002 The Upton-upon-Severn Civic Society has applied for
tickets for its members to attend the above event. IF we are fortunate
in the draw for places that takes place in May, a group will attend.
