Community Care provide transport to doctors & hospitals for those who can't find other methods of transport. Run entirely by volunteers in the office (which is above The Map Shop) and drivers, they are a vital resource to the people of Upton and the surrounding area.

At our last open meeting the Baptist minister Paul McCabe (who is also one of our drivers) gave us a highly amusing talk on being "The New Boy". He has obviously thoroughly enjoyed his with us so far. He gave us pause for more thought and, with his permission, I should like to quote a few of his words:

"I ended up writing some theological reflections on the volunteer work I have completed in my first year in Upton and I would like to share my own conclusions. There is no better way to express your care for someone than to be with them, to be prepared to journey with them through the good times and through the tough times. UCC provides this to many in the community who are vulnerable. It could look at itself as just being a driver service but it is more than that. It has become part of the fabric of life for many, providing support and friendship, whilst for others it is seen as a very professionally run service at a time of need. Whatever else is true, it has been my experience that in a community like Upton its service is invaluable".

These kind words were very gratifying to me and to those members present. Apparently they were also noted by the University of Bristol's Department of Theology!

I move on to a small request to clients. Please could you either give your bus pass number (last 4 digits only) to the office when booking or bring your pass with you to your appointment. A message to drivers: please submit claims to a committee member or post through the door of 2 Church St by the Tuesday morning before our bi-monthly meeting. For the intervening months please submit your claim as soon as you have done your last trip for the month.

Thanks for all your co-operation.
