'Hanley Huskies' v Barnards Green under 14's
.

Monday 18 May 2008

Following the Firsts ,   Huskies win at Fortress Glebe

Thanks to clearing westerly skies and the new club covers allowing a wicket to be used Hanley welcomed Barnards Green to The Fortress. Following on from the Firsts away win over the Green at Newland on Saturday, (we will pass on the seconds home defeat) the Huskies were anticipating a sterner test of character and game.

Hanley's skipper Will Chambers broke the mould of losing the toss called correctly and inserted the Green on a lively track, Mark Smout removed the dangerous Wilson for a first ball duck the batsman edging to a leaping Bottomley in the slips. In the third over from the Church  End Smout removed the attacking Hennersey LBW with a ball of good length that was plumb. Resistance from the accomplished Scullion was ended when Tom Bottomley found movement and bounce ripping out the heart of the Greens batting, Scullion caught & bowled, Selldone bowled first ball, Harris bowled and Howles caught behind edging to the athletic Spring. James Smith took a diving catch off the reliable Bovington, bowling into the stiffening breeze from the Severn End. Green were 20.6, Hanley's
fielding was excellent, Jacob Lee swooping around the boundary was complemented by the Panther like Matt Dunwell at square leg, and Louis Duckworth patrolled the mid on area throughout the evening. Two runs out and a fly slip catch by Bywater off Chambers wrapped the innings up at
35 all out off 11.5 overs.

Hanley knew they had to bat with determination and responsibility was handed to Alex Spring and Toby Harper to see off the pacy, accurate and dangerous Green bowling attack of Hennersey & Scullion. Singles nudged kept the score board moving slowly and both openers moved the score
along. Although Harper fell for only 4 and Smith followed for 3 the job was done. Spring batted though for 20, Matt Dunwell fell looking for cover boundary glory - for a duck, Johnny Bywater added a single before the game was sealed with a boundary from Spring for a Hanley win by 8
wickets.

A pleasant game played by two well matched spirited sides, the game being a credit to all the players from both sides.
