August 2004
Work commenced on Monday 2nd August following removal of the barriers. The week mainly involved tree felling. I did see BT engineers at one stage. We tend to forget that the viaduct is not only a road but a means of carrying cables for various utilities as well, all of which have to be re-routed.
On 16th August the demolition of the viaduct was started.
17th August - I was invited to Norwest Holst site offices to undertake a site induction and was presented with a hard hat & high-visibility jacket. Under supervision I can now go on site to take photographs. Thanks to Royston Embling, the site inspector for Halcrow, and John Proctor, Norwest Holst general foreman. Apparently the concrete on the viaduct is absolutely rotten! The 'stone' pillars are not stone - they are concrete, so will be demolished with the rest of the structure.
26th August - demolition completed, the concrete crusher is now in action.
I will be adding pictures to this page throughout the month and will notify updates via the front page.
